Transportation to Capitol Hill from the Washington Convention Center

Leadership Day 2016, which is being held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, located at 801 Mt Vernon Pl NW, Washington, DC, is relatively close in proximity to Capitol Hill but not within easy walking distance. The closest metro station to the convention center is the Mount Vernon Square station, but the Metro Center station (10 minute walk) is easier to navigate in terms of more direct access to Capitol Hill.  Cabs will also be available in front of the convention center to take you to Capitol Hill. Attendees are responsible for these transportation costs.

Here are some options:

Taxi/Cabs:

  • Cabs will be available outside the front entrance of the convention center to take you to Capitol Hill on May 4.
  • The convention center is typically a 10-15 minute cab ride to Capitol Hill.
  • It should cost approximately $10 (non-rush hour) or $12 (rush hour) for a one way trip to Capitol Hill.

Metro to the House Side of the Capitol using the Metro Center Station:

  • While in front of the convention center, walk a short distance West on Mt. Vernon Place, NW.
  • Turn left on 9th St NW.
  • Walk approx. 1 block South on 9th St NW.
  • Turn right on New York Ave NW.
  • Walk approx. 2 blocks South West on New York Ave, NW.
  • Turn left on 11th St NW.
  • Walk approx. 2 blocks South on 11th St, NW
  • Enter Metro Center Station Stop using 11TH ST NW & G ST NW entrance
  • Take the Silver or Orange or Blue Line to Capitol South Metro Stop.
  • Get off at the Capitol South Metro stop.
  • Cost: $2.15 (one way); travel time approximately 30 minutes.

Metro to the Senate Side of the Capitol:

  • While in front of the convention center, walk approx. 1 block East on Mt Vernon Place, NW.
  • Turn Right on 7th St NW.
  • Walk approx. 2 blocks South on 7th St NW.
  • Enter Gallery Place China Town Metro Station using 7TH ST NW & H ST NW entrance
  • Take the Red Line to Silver Spring or to Glenmont.
  • Get off at Union Station and walk towards the Capitol (look for the dome).
  • Cost: $2.15 (one way); travel time approximately 15-20 minutes.

Washington, D.C.’s metro system is generally a very safe and economical mode of transportation. The convention center information desk will be happy to point you in the right direction, should you decide to travel to Capitol Hill via the metro. Please be advised that during rush hour times (early morning/late afternoon) both the metro system and taxi service can be busy so please plan accordingly.
